What is a fursuit?
A fursuit is a costume, based on a fursona (a character). Most fursuits are made of faux fur fabric or fleece. The faux fur is actually made of plastic hairs to make it look and feel as real fur / hairs.
There are many types of fursuits. You have toony (bright simple colors, clear patterns, big eyes), semi-realistic or realistic fursuits (painted fur, very detailled).
The body part of the fursuit can be either plantigrade (no padding) or digigrade (with padding on hips, feet, ...). The padding makes the character look more proportionally correct by having more realistic legs/paws, hips, ...
People who make the fursuits are called fursuitmakers.
How much does a fursuit cost?
The price of a fursuit depends on the experience of the fursuitmaker and the type of fursuit.
Beginner fursuitmakers sometimes offer lower prices to help them get on their way and get experience.
Realistic fursuits tend to be more pricey than toony suits, because of the details in the costume.
The price of a full fursuit, including head, body, tail and paws can vary between €800 and €15000, depending on the experience of the maker and the complexity, style and accessories of the fursuit.
Is it warm when wearing a fursuit?
Short answer: Yes! But most fursuiters have some tricks up their sleeve.
In the muzzle of a fursuithead, there is often a built-in fan pulling fresh air inside the head.
Under the bodysuit, people often wear thermal gear to keep cool and keep sweat from getting in contact with the fursuit. Some people even go a step further and wear a cooling vest with icepacks under the bodysuit.
By fursuiting a lot, people get used to the heat and can stay longer in fursuit, even in the summer.
